AND A LARGE POLICE PRESENCE IN LOCKLAND WHERE WE’RE LIVE WITH WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE SITUATION SO FAR. AND OUR PERFECT STRETCH OF WEATHER COMING TO AN. AND HOW SOON BEFORE SHOWERS ARRIVE AND THE STORM THREAT FOR FRIDAY. COMING UP. THIS IS WLWT NEWS 5 LEADING THE WAY WITH BREAKING NEWS AND BREAKING NEWS. THREE CHILDREN ARE INJURED AND TWO CRITICALLY AFTER AN OVERNIGHT HOUSE FIRE IN WINTON HILLS WAS FIRST ON THE SCENE THIS MORNING AS CREWS WORKED TO RESCUE KIDS TRAPPED INSIDE THAT BURNING APARTMENT. WLWT NEWS 5 BRIAN HAMRICK IS LIVE WITH WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR. BRIAN. YEAH, WELL, IT WAS AN INTENSE FIRE BROKE OUT AT ABOUT 530 JUST BEFORE 530 THIS MORNING. AND TAKE A LOOK. YOU CAN SEE THIS. ALL THIS LEFT IS THIS CHART APARTMENT. THE CREWS ARE HERE. THEY’RE TRYING TO BATTEN IT DOWN AS WE SPEAK RIGHT NOW. BUT YOU CAN SEE IN THE DEBRIS THE REMINDERS THAT KIDS WERE HERE. THERE ARE BICYCLES, PARTS OF KIDS BEDS OR SKATEBOARD BOARDS, THAT SORT OF THING IN THE DEBRIS HERE. NOW, NEIGHBORS SAY A WOMAN SPOTTED THE FIRE, CAME POUNDING ON DOORS TO WAKE EVERYONE OUT. AT THAT TIME, A MOTHER AND HER OLDEST DAUGHTER WERE OUTSIDE, BUT THREE OF HER YOUNGEST CHILDREN WERE TRAPPED INSIDE WITH THE FIRE BURNING. NOW, A 70 YEAR OLD WHO LIVES RIGHT NEXT DOOR DASHED INTO THIS BURNING BUILDING WITH NO SHOES. SHE WAS ABLE TO SAVE A FOUR YEAR OLD, BUT WHEN SHE TRIED TO GET BACK IN, THE OTHER TWO WERE STILL REMAINING. THIS FIRE, THE FLAMES OF SMOKE, THEY WERE JUST TOO INTENSE. SHE COULDN’T GET TO THEM. WE TALKED TO HER A SHORT TIME AGO. I SAID, I GUESS I COULD BEAT THAT FIRE. THE THREE MINUTES I RAN UPSTAIRS, WE GOT TO THE BACK ROOM LOOKING AT LOOKING FOR THE BABIES. I PUT STUFF OVER THEM TO. TO WHERE? WHEN I COME BACK. COME BACK IN THERE, I’M GOING TO GRAB THEM. AND WE’RE GETTING UP OUT OF HERE. SO THE SO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT COULD JUST CLEAR AND CLEAN THE HOUSE. I’M BREATHING THE FUMES TRYING TO GET THIS BABY. I’M LIKE, OH, I’M BREATHING IN NOW. IN AND OUT. AND AND THEN I WAS LIKE, COME ON, YOU COULD DO THIS TO GET THIS BABY. YEAH, IT WAS A IT WAS AN INTENSE MOMENT THERE AS SHE TRIED TO GET THOSE KIDS OUT OF THE FIRE. NOW, SHE SAYS WHEN SHE REACHED THIS FOUR YEAR OLD WAS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRWELL HERE THAT THE FOUR YEAR OLD WAS CLINGING TO A POST JUST PARALYZED WITH FEAR. AND EVEN THOUGH THEY’VE BEEN CALLING FOR THE KIDS TO COME OUT, THEY WERE APPARENTLY FROZEN, COULDN’T GET OUT. NOW FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO GET IN, GET THE OTHER TWO OUT, THREE CHILDREN WERE TAKEN INTO THE HOSPITAL ALTOGETHER. WE’RE TOLD TWO OF THEM ARE IN CRITICAL CONDITION. MEANWHILE, AT THE SCHOOL, WHICH IS JUST NEARBY, THE SUPERINTENDENT TELLS US THAT THEY BROUGHT COUNSELORS IN TO TALK TO THE KIDS ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENED HERE. REPORTING LIVE, BRIAN HAMRICK WLWT NEWS 5. NOW, BRIAN, WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE CAUSE OF THAT FIRE? YEAH, IT’S STILL TOO EARLY TO TALK TO INVESTIGATORS. THEY AREN’T SURE WHAT CAUSED THIS FIRE. BUT THIS WAS INTERESTING. WE DID TALK TO SOME OF THE NEIGHBORS HERE. THEY SAY JUST YESTERDAY SAY THAT THE WOMAN WHO LIVED HERE REPORTED SMELLING GAS IN THE AREA. WE HAVE NO IDEA IF THAT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FIRE, BUT IT WILL BE SOMETHING CERTAINLY THAT INVESTIGATORS WILL WANT TO LOOK INTO FOR BRIAN HAMRICK REPORTING LIVE FOR US AND WINTON HILLS, THANK YOU SO MUCH, BRIAN. AND WE’RE ALSO LEADING THE WAY WITH MORE BREAKING NEWS THIS AFTERNOON. CREWS ARE ON THE SCENE OF A FIRE IN A FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP THIS IS HAPPENING ON ARROYO RIDGE COURT RIGHT NOW IN WLWT NEWS 5. KAREN JOHNSON IS LIVE AT THAT SCENE WITH WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR THERE, KAREN. HEY. WELL, GOOD AFTERNOON. THE FIRE THE ARSON INVESTIGATION TEAM JUST ARRIVED ON SCENE HERE AT ARROYO RIDGE COURT IN FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP. WHAT I CAN TELL YOU IS I TALKED TO THE FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP POLICE SERGEANT WHO TELLS ME THEY DO HAVE ONE PERSON IN CUSTODY AND ANOTHER PERSON, A WOMAN, WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER SHE CLAIMED SOMEONE INSIDE HER HOUSE. A FAMILY MEMBER SET HER ON FIRE. I HAVE WITH ME NOW CHIEF THOMAS WITH THE FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT. FROM A FIRE POINT OF VIEW, WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME HAPPENED? SO AT ABOUT 1026 THIS MORNING, WE RECEIVED A CALL FOR AN INDIVIDUAL IN THE BACKYARD ON FIRE DURING OUR RESPONSE, WE WERE CALLED BY THE NEIGHBOR WHO SAID THERE WAS SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE STRUCTURE. WE UPGRADED OUR RESPONSE TO A FULL STRUCTURE FIRE UPON ARRIVAL, WE DID FIND A FEMALE IN THE BACKYARD SUFFERING SERIOUS INJURIES. SHE SUBSEQUENTLY WAS TRANSPORTED TO A LANDING ZONE AND FLOWN BY AIR CARE TO THE HOSPITAL. I DO NOT HAVE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ON HER CONDITION. CREWS EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE WITHIN JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES. WE HAVE NOTIFIED THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE AND THE BUTLER COUNTY FIRE INVESTIGATION TEAM AND IT WILL BE A JOINT INVESTIGATION USING THOSE TWO ENTITIES ALONG WITH OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT. AND AT THIS POINT, WE’RE STILL INVESTIGATING AND WE’RE WAITING FOR SERGEANT MCCROSKEY TO RETURN HERE WITH A WARRANT. AND I UNDERSTAND SHE ACTUALLY JUMPED OUT OF A SECOND STORY WINDOW ON FIRE, IS THAT CORRECT? THAT WAS THE INITIAL REPORT THAT WE RECEIVED OVER THE RADIO. I HAVE NOT TALKED TO HER. SO I DON’T KNOW IF THERE WAS ANY OTHER INFORMATION FROM HER IF THAT DID HAPPEN WITH WHAT I’M HEARING FROM THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, YOU KNOW, YOU COULD SEE IT’S A TWO STORY STRUCTURE, TWO STORY HOUSE. BUT BEHIND IF SHE JUMPED OUT OF A WINDOW FROM BEHIND, IT’S MORE LIKE THREE AND A HALF STORIES BECAUSE OF THE DROP BEHIND THE HOUSE. THAT’S CORRECT. THERE’S A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT GRADE FROM THE FRONT YARD TO THE BACK YARD IN FACT, THE BASEMENT IS A WALKOUT. BASEMENT WITH A DOOR. SO IT’S MORE OF A THREE STORY. AND DEPENDING ON HOW FAR OUT SHE WENT, IT COULD BE MORE LIKE THE THREE AND A HALF STORIES. SO WE EXPECT POSSIBLY SOME OTHER INJURIES THAT ARE RELATED TO THAT AS WELL AS THE BURNS. OKAY. AGAIN, THAT WOMAN AIR CHIEF THOMAS, THANK YOU. I’LL LET YOU GO BACK TO THE FIRE RIGHT NOW. AGAIN, WHAT WE HAVE HERE, ARSON INVESTIGATION TEAM ON SCENE HERE IN FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP. A WOMAN FLOWN TO UC MEDICAL CENTER WITH SERIOUS BURN INJURIES. THE POLICE SERGEANT ALSO TELLS ME SHE HAD HER TEETH KNOCKED OUT A NEIGHBOR BEHIND THE HOUSE CALLED 911 TO REPORT HER ON FIRE AFTER THEY SAY SHE JUMPED OUT OF A SECOND STORY WINDOW. AGAIN, HER CONDITION WHEN SHE WAS FLOWN, WE DON’T KNOW AT THIS TIME. WE ARE WAITING FOR THE POLICE SERGEANT TO ARRIVE WITH A SEARCH WARRANT. WE HOPE TO LEARN MORE AS THE AFTERNOON GOES ON. OF COURSE, WE’LL BRING IT TO YOU LIVE ONLINE AND ON THE AIR.
